The journey

Where you are in the GLP-1 journey

Coaching across all three phases, with the bulk of the work going into setting things up properly at the start and helping the changes hold after the medication stops.

01

Just starting, or about to start

If you’re starting a GLP-1, or about to, this is the phase to get everything in order before the weight loss begins. The people who get the most out of these medications use the time on the drug to build proper training and eating habits, so the changes hold up after.

Coaching at this phase covers setting up a training programme that protects muscle while you’re losing weight, getting your nutrition organised around enough protein and the appetite changes you’re about to feel, and putting routines in place that you’ll lean on after the medication stops.

02

Currently on a GLP-1

If you’re actively on a medication and the weight is dropping, the work is about getting more out of the loss than just a smaller number on the scale. The thing not enough prescribers warn you about is what’s actually being lost. A lot of the weight loss on GLP-1s is muscle, not just fat - and that matters for how strong you are, how your body looks, and how likely you are to put the weight back on once you stop.

Coaching at this phase covers training built specifically to keep muscle on you, nutrition that hits enough protein even when you don’t feel like eating much, and tracking what’s happening more broadly than just the scale: visible changes, strength, energy, recovery.

03

Coming off, or recently off

This is the phase that decides whether the work holds. When the medication stops, the appetite comes back, and people who didn’t lay the groundwork during the loss often put the weight back on - often with less muscle than they had to start with.

Coaching at this phase covers planning when and how to come off the medication, replacing the appetite suppression the drug was doing for you with eating habits that hold up on their own, and keeping training going so you keep what you built.

The approach

How I think about GLP-1s

GLP-1 medications are the most effective drugs we’ve ever had for sustained weight loss. Most people who take them lose a meaningful amount of weight, and for people with obesity or type 2 diabetes there are real benefits beyond weight loss alone - in things like heart health and blood sugar control.

What the evidence is also clear on, but what most prescribers don’t really get into, is what’s actually being lost. A meaningful chunk of weight loss on GLP-1s is muscle, not just fat. Without proper resistance training and enough protein, around 30–40% of the weight you lose can come from muscle. That has knock-on effects on strength, bone density, metabolism, and how likely you are to gain the weight back later.

My take on GLP-1s is pragmatic. They work for a lot of people, and they fail when they’re treated as a substitute for the underlying work on training and nutrition. The clients who do best with these drugs treat the period of weight loss as the time to do that underlying work - while the medication is making things easier.

About the coach

Tom Rawcliffe

I’m Tom Rawcliffe. I’ve been coaching for over a decade. Most of my background is in strength and conditioning for combat sports, where I worked with professional fighters across MMA, Muay Thai and kickboxing.

A core part of that work is managing controlled weight loss to a deadline. Weight-class athletes do this every fight: hitting a target weight on a strict schedule, with professional careers on the line. What I learned over years of that work transfers directly to GLP-1 coaching, because the underlying problem is the same - controlled weight loss with body composition and performance kept intact.

Alongside that, I’m a Level 4 Certified Personal Trainer, an AfN Certified Nutrition Coach, and Level 4 Certified in Diabetes and Obesity Management.

Common questions

FAQ

Do I need to already be on a GLP-1 to work with you?

No. Plenty of GLP-1 clients are still considering, want to set things up properly before they start, or are several months in and want help fine-tuning what they’re doing. The work fits any phase.

I’m thinking about starting a GLP-1. When should I begin coaching?

Earlier is better. The people who get the most out of GLP-1s are the ones who use the time on the drug to build proper training and eating habits underneath. Starting coaching before or at the same time as the medication gives you the best foundation.

Will the weight come back when I stop the medication?

For most people, yes, at least to some degree. That’s the central problem with GLP-1s used on their own. The work I do is built around tackling this head-on: eating habits that hold up without the drug, training that keeps going, and a plan for the transition off.

Are you for or against GLP-1 medications?

Neither. The drugs work, and they help a lot of people get to a healthier weight than they could otherwise. They also have specific ways they fail that most prescribers don’t get into. My focus is on making sure people who are taking them get the result they’re paying for.

Can we work online, or does it have to be in person?

The bulk of the 1:1 work runs in-person at the gym in Deptford, but online coaching is available on request for GLP-1 clients. Get in touch and we’ll work out what fits.
