The gym

The Commando Temple, Deptford

The Commando Temple is an independent specialist gym on Resolution Way, directly opposite Deptford station and right next to Deptford Market Yard. It’s an award-winning facility, recently featured in Men’s Health, and specialises in personal training rather than running as a typical members’ gym.

Most clients come in from Deptford itself, Greenwich, Brockley, Lewisham and New Cross, with some travelling in from further afield in SE London.

Trains & transit

Deptford station is directly opposite the gym. New Cross and Greenwich are both about ten minutes away by train or bus. DLR users can come in via Deptford Bridge.

Parking

Parking and parking passes are available. Let me know in advance and I’ll sort it.

The space

An open gym rather than a private studio, kitted out specifically for the work. Kit is set up for personal training and S&C, and there’s plenty of room and equipment to work without queuing for a station.

What 1:1 personal training with me looks like

Built around you, not a template

Sessions run once or twice a week depending on what works around your schedule. The training programme is built around your specific starting point and gets revised every four to six weeks as the data comes in.

Nutrition integrated, not bolted on

Nutrition is part of the coaching, not handed off as a meal plan PDF. It’s worked through alongside the training as one connected system. Direct access between sessions for questions that come up mid-week.

Coaching built for the long haul

You’re not paying for someone to count your reps. You’re paying for someone whose actual job is to make sure the work works - including when work gets busy or you go on holiday.

Most personal training in this part of London happens in commercial gyms with rotating PTs and templated programmes, or in small-group classes with eight people doing the same workout. What I do is different from both.

Tom Rawcliffe

I’ve been coaching for over a decade. My background is in strength and conditioning for combat sports, working with professionals, UFC contenders and world champions earlier in my career. These days I mostly coach people in their 30s, 40s and 50s across SE London who want to look better and perform better.

I’m a Level 4 Certified Personal Trainer and an AfN Certified Nutrition Coach. What I bring to 1:1 work is the same level of attention I’d use in a fight camp, applied to a sustainable schedule for everyday life.

Where exactly is the gym?

The Commando Temple, Resolution Way, Deptford, SE8. Directly opposite Deptford station, right next to Deptford Market Yard.

Can I come and see the gym first?

Two ways. The free 45–60 minute consultation (the natural next step after a discovery call) includes a full tour as part of it. Before that, you’re welcome to drop by during opening hours and have a look around anytime.

Is there parking?

Yes. Parking and parking passes are available. Let me know in advance and I’ll sort it. Most clients still come in by train since Deptford station is right opposite the gym, but parking is there if you need it.

How do I get there from Greenwich, Brockley or Lewisham?

Deptford is well-connected by train, bus and DLR. Greenwich is one stop away by train, Brockley is about 15 minutes door-to-door by overground, Lewisham is a short bus or DLR ride. Specific routes depend on where you’re coming from in each area.

Are sessions at the studio only, or can you come to me?

The work is at the studio. There are good reasons for that: the kit, the assessment tools, and the privacy of a dedicated space all matter to how the coaching runs. If getting to the studio is genuinely impossible, raise it on the discovery call and I’ll either work something out or point you somewhere appropriate.
